Sneak Peek: Saxbys UPenn’s Major Makeover

When we first decided to give Saxbys UPenn a much-needed makeover, we knew three things had to happen: more light, more tables, and more outlets. This café has long been a coffee stop for students and professors, but we wanted it to be a place where they could study, host meetings, and stick around for awhile.

Since all of our loyal Saxbys UPenn guests have been patiently waiting since we first began construction, we crossed the caution tape to give you a preview of what’s going on in this soon-to-be splendid cafe.

Our design inspiration: take the classic, clean aesthetic of Philly’s Ivy League institution and add a burst of energy. That means sophisticated millwork, furniture with clean lines, and fun, funky light fixtures to brighten up the space a bit. We’re also designating ample wall space for Penn students to gallery their art.

A few elements of the Saxbys UPenn you’ve come to know will remain intact. For example, the coffee bar is staying in the same place and will still be accented with subway tile. Except now it’s in a sleek white and patterned to echo the brick in our Locust Street sidewalk.

Other than that, you may not even recognize it. Hang tight, Philly — we’ll be open again November 9th!
